Dear Customer,
Thanks for your usual cooperation.
Ref lily crop 2008
Recently, we have done the lily field inspections in the main lily bulb production areas in Holland, like the provinces of
Limburg, Overijssel and Drenthe. The planting in spring was delayed about 2 weeks due to a lot of rainfall in March and April.
In May and June the weather suddenly changed into very hot, dry and sunny. The growers had to do a lot of irrigation.
In these 2 warm months the growing recovered mostly from the delayed planting and became almost normal again.
In July and August the temperature was normal, but the rainfall was much more than usual and the sunshine less.
In September, the temperature was cooler than normal, we had a dry, sunny period and later a rainy, cloudy period in September.
In October, the temperature was rather low so far and we had a lot of rainfall, especially in the western part of Holland.
The field condition is rather normal. The growing of the bulbs seems to be average, but this also depends on the growers, fields, etc.
The plants are quickly dying and many fields of LA and Asiatics are brown already. Also the field of a variety like Acapulco
is colouring brown already. This might be a little earlier than normal. This should be good for the maturing of the bulbs.
The harvest season has started already for the Longiflorum. The results were quite normal. Soon the harvest will start for
the Asiatics and LA and later for the Oriental and OT.
The international lily bulb market situation is still difficult. There are many factors influencing the very slow demand :
· the price decrease during the harvest season of Dutch grown crop 2007 and Dutch crop 2006
· the too big bulb production internationally, Holland and Southern Hemisphere combined
· the low cut flower prices in many countries for a too long period in 2008.
· The increased costs for oil, etc.
· The Euro rate ( which recently has come down a little)
· The oversupply of bulbs from Chile and New Zealand, crop 2008, and the dumping of these bulbs.
· The uncertain economic situation internationally.
The above-mentioned factors cause a great lack of confidence in the market and a slow demand. On the other hand,
we have to select the best lots from the selected growers. Therefore, we cannot completely wait with ordering from
these growers until or even after harvesting. The quality control of the bulbs is most important.
We would like to ask you still to consider your expected demand and inform us your estimation soonest.
We are glad to send you some pictures of the lily fields in the provinces Overijssel and Limburg, which we took recently.
We have made pictures of both of the 2 years grown fields and the normal fields, mostly the main varieties but also some new varieties
like Marlon, Montezuma, Mabel, etc. The pictures are also shown on our website at the following links:
We would like to invite you to contact us if you have any questions and of course, your enquiries are most welcome.
The market for Orientals is very slow at this moment for most varieties/sizes. There are only a few exceptions like
some very new exclusively grown varieties.
Having pleasure to be at your service and looking forward to hearing from you, we beg to remain with the best regards.
