Dear Customer,
Thanks for your usual cooperation.
Ref lily growing and field condition
We are glad to inform you that we have made the usual field inspections in this season.
We have visited 2 main lily growing areas of which we sent you some pictures,
which we are also showing on our website www.jandewitenzonen.com .
We have visited the following production areas:
- September 27 Limburg province in southern Holland
- October 3 Overijssel, Drente provinces in North eastern Holland.
The weather this year in Holland is rather unusual. It was very cold in March and April,
this delayed the start of the growing Late April until the middle of May,
and it suddenly became hot weather. Then it became cold again.
In June, the temperature rose again and especially July was extremely hot and dry,
it was most hot month in more than 100 years, and the temperature was over 30 c in many days.
This is very unusual in Holland. In August, the weather was rather cool,
often lower than 20 c and rainy (most rainy month of August in about 100 years).
Now September has become the warmest and driest month of September since the weather registration
started in 1706. The average temperature in September was 17.9 c., normal is 14.2 c!!
The growers have continued the irrigating of their oriental lily fields in September.
This is most unusual and risky, as the autumn in Holland usually is a rainy season.
So the growers are afraid to irrigate in September, as the harvesting will start soon and might become
very difficult if it starts to rain in October, November or December.
However, due to the extremely dry weather they take the risk and have continued the irrigation of the fields.
The result of the extreme weather conditions seems to be that the bulbs growing seems to be delayed.
The bulb size is smaller than usual on this date.
It is difficult to estimate if the bulb growth can still recover this delay in autumn.
The fields seem to be too dry still.
The continuation of the growth will depend on the weather and the average temperature in October and November.
It is important when we will get the first strong night frost,
because then the plants will die quickly and the bulb growing will stop.
We can also see a big difference per grower and field.
If the planting density of the lily bulbs is too high,
meaning too many bulbs are planted per M2, the growth is much less.
Of course the growing situation is always different per grower,
area and sometimes variety, etc. We have tried to give you some general information.
Ref market condition
The market for Asiatic and LA hybrids has become rather active now.
The prices have increased for the most popular varieties.
The market for Orientals is still very slow;
the growing situation in the field does not influence the market yet, in general.
Moreover, we have also put on our website some recent pictures of our test greenhouse.
We planted a second round of test plantings of all the stocks that we are trading this year.
In this way we could check the bulb quality after the long cool storage and in the warm summer season.
This will improve our understanding about the quality of the grown lots.
We would like to invite you to visit our test greenhouse, if you visit the Hortifair next month.
Having pleasure to be at your service and looking forward to hearing from you,
we beg to remain with the best regards.
Yours sincerely,
Jan de Wit en Zonen B.V.
