We like to inform you the following about the Tulip situation at this moment.

Several growers in Holland have problems with the Tulips in the fields.
This season the growers planted more early there bulbs but the rain did not came at that time. October and November was very very dry.
The roots did not develop well but bulbs started to grow early. December was very wet.
In the winter the Tulips had grown well and many Tulips came out of the soil before the 2 weeks -15°C to -20°C in early February.

Now we can see a mix of Frost damage and Augusta.
If the tulips are damaged Haakman thinks that it is 80% frost damage and 20% Augusta damage.
The damaged tulips cannot grow anymore and will stop grown.

Please note that if the tulips have Augusta it can NOT be free for Japan!!

Several Tulip fields of the following varieties have the mix of Frost damage and Augusta.
· Purple Prince , Candy prince , White Prince , Sunny prince and other sports
· Leen vd Mark , Red Mark , and other sports
· Monte Carlo , Abba , Viking , and other sports
· Coquette , Flaming Coquette and other sports
· Christmas Dream , Christmas Marvel , White Marvel and other sports.
· Singe Early varieties.
· Double early varieties.
· Other early planted tulips!!

In the NOP and on the sandy soil are less problem.

Hope to have you well informed and keep you informed.

With best regards,

Several companies send me a e-mail back with the question “what is Augusta”?

Herewith we send you 2 pictures of Augusta damage and 2 pictures of frost damage.
The different is not so big.

Augusta is a kind of “virus” that appear when the soil temperature is a bit high.
Also if there is no rain after planting this kind of “virus” is active. This Year October and November where very dry.
The influence of Augusta is that the tulip will die soon and will not make a big bulb.
If the bulbs grows like a 11/12 or 12/+ than you can see Augusta “virus” in the greenhouse next season!

Also with frost damage the harvest will be a lot less than normal.

How many % this is of the total crop we cannot say yet. But if there is frost / Augusta damage like 10% at this moment than later at harvesting it can be 20% final damage.

Hope to have you well informed.
