Some pictures of Zeeland crop.

I visited the growers on april 30th. (pictures attached taken on 30th of april)

The crop looks good and does not show much damage from the cold winter.

But, it is very late. the growers estimate that the flowering is about two weeks later than last year.
Some growers mention that the crop looks little bit less strong than 2009 crop.
However, that was exeptional year and can not be compared to this years crop.
We think it can be considered to be a normal crop.

At this point, it is too early to judge if G stage will be much later. The next 4 weeks are very important.
untill today, the temperatures stay cold at night, there was even some frost last night.
The day temperatures are slowly going up. But , still too low for time of year.

There are only limited growers in Zeeland. They are generally big and grow 30 hectares or more.
They do not like to grow small acreage varieties and select varieties that easy produce high number of bulbs.
that is reason why there are not so many varieties available from Zeeland crop.
Growers often do not request for PQ Free lot number for Japan. They find it too much work.

There are many lot numbers that have too high virus percentage for Japan.

件名　: short update Holland crop tulip

Short update for you on Holland crop.

Pictures as attached are taken on 6th of May.

Tulip crop looks normal. Flowering is about 10 days later for normal Holland tulips.
Crop 2009 was fairly early. Most growers finished with taking off the flowers by 30th of April.
This year, crop 2010 the growers hope to finish this week.

The fields look normal. We could not find much damage from winter season.
Also there seems to be very little water damage. Not more than normal.

Growers opinion is that we are dealing with normal crop condition, little bit late.

We hope that the temperatures will now go up. The tulips now need warmer temperature to make a good bulb.
This time of year is very important. There has been enough rain in past weeks. Only a few growers started to irrigate the fields but now stopped.
It is not necessary anymore.

The picture of Hyacinth Mosaik are made in town of Limmen (north Holland) This town has tradition of many years
to make mosaik from Hyacinth flowers. For example, they make copy of famous painting, famous building etc.
Teams of voluntairy workers compete for first price. One group this year made choice for Japanese castle.
It took second place. it is made of 100% hyacinth flowers and took several weeks to build.
