Re: Tulip harvest update.

On Thursday 23rd of July, we visited several tulip growers in North area to check the harvest.
Both growers near SCHAGEN.
1 grower is on sandy soil
1 grower is on clay soil.

Weather in past week has been extremely warm with very high sunlight intensity. It has made the browning of foliage speed very high.
The soil temperature is over 20C at bulb level. This is much too warm for bulbs.

The growth of most tulips stopped already and harvest has started even in the north area. This is about 10 days earlier than normal.
The enlargement of bulbs is less than normal years. Already now growers are reporting that they will deliver shortages in quantity and size.
Big sizes did not grow well at all.

Soil is very dry, and there is not much sand or soil attached to the bulbs anymore. This makes it more easy for growers to dry the bulbs very quick. This is positive.

We expect that prices for late orders will increase. And shortages in quantities will be reported through the season. We will keep you informed with details and offer alternative varieties that are available.

If you are interested in video of growers harvesting in field, please inform. I will also post on Facebook page. It is interesting to see and also shows condition of soil.

Best regards, v Andre Rutte
